2012 – January 23 is the year of the Dragon

Chinese New Year begins according to the Chinese calendar which consists of both Gregorian and lunar-solar calendar systems. Because the track of the new moon changes from year to year, Chinese New Year can begin anytime between late January and mid-February. Below is a chart that shows the beginning day of Chinese New Year and the animal sign for that year.

Chinese (or Lunar) New Year – is the longest and most solemn holiday in China. By tradition, this holiday the Chinese must be fully pay off debts, buy new clothes, and do general cleaning in the house, to arrange a lavish family meal, bring gifts to the spirits, to give to friends and family “red envelopes” with “lucky money”. The night before the New Year in China made in huge quantities squib (recently the authorities of large cities have imposed restrictions on this kind of entertainment – in connection with frequent fires from fireworks.)

The eve of the Lunar New Year, also known as Spring Festival (Chuntsze), as well as a few days after it shall be deemed to China national holiday. Usually, festivals (and the rest after them) lasted 10-15 days. At that time, cease to most public institutions, including sometimes even movie theaters, restaurants and hotels (depending on rank and affiliation). Business activity during the festival there was little if any. Many Chinese, especially young ones, tend to return to the eve of the Lunar New Year in their place of birth, for parents, holidays people spend with family. For this reason, five days before the holiday and a week and a half after all means of transport in China have absolutely unimaginable congestion. By working population is starting to come back for the fifth-eighth day. But the celebratory mood lasts until the Lantern Festival, which falls on the fifteenth day of the first lunar month.

If you do not want to be stuck in China, like a cork in the narrow neck – it is better not plan any commercial activities in this period.

Chinese New Year is a luni-solar time each year included in the edition of Lunario CIENTEC for Costa Rica, like other dates as the Christian Easter, New Year Hebrew, the Islamic New Year and others. Held on the second New Moon (data lunar) after the Winter Solstice (21 or December 22 – solar data). Therefore changes every year and can occur between late January and February.
